The noble person does not wait until he feels good or feels brave to do his or her duty. We triumph as humans when we overcome anxiety or negative emotions through doing what is right and being virtuous. Most people around us–including our parents, grandparents, educators, church leaders, and most other authorities–seem to have the value of always seeking to feel good and never bad. Once you realize that you have been denied character building experiences (through being kept from them or from not being taught how to not over react), you can stop beating yourself up. We may not know what faith and love are, but we are aware of what faith and love are not– when others fail us and we resent them.
